im preparing for a new cam install on my 96' LT1 in my nova...im gettin new spring retainers an alll that and a new distributor gear. my question is ..on the LT1 the water pump is cam driven..mine however is not because its been converted to electric. and im wanting to get a new timing chain but they all cost so damn much because of the special gear for the water pump drive. if i plug the hole in the timing cover and remove the water pump drive gear. could i fit any roller timing chain on my LT1 without spending an extra 200$

yes, since you have a 96 model with a vented distributor and an electric water pump you can run a gen1 small block timing chain set. check for timing cover clearance if you run a double roller. i had to clearance mine a little for the double roller. also with your new cam check the dowel pin length and make sure it is not too long and binding in the distributor when you install it. i used a quarter and some gasket sealer to plug up my water pump seal. hope this helps.

yes deffinetly that cleared up my question...i ordered a comp cams xtreme feul injection cam.. its the 292/300 dur 584/579 lift 113 lsa... its the LT1/LT4 specific cam so it should be close..if not it wont take much to get it right..

oh another thing.the stock balancer doesnt have timing marks..since my LT1 is coverted to carbureter and opti has been plugged so it has an HEI distributor it now has to be timed like a normal gen 1 sbc correct? so i ordered a new balancer with timing marks on it...and im now aware ill have to have the hub machined for a keyway since its pressed on stock without one

ok, so you did away with the ole optispark, then you can run any sbc cam you choose then. the balancer i run came with a new hub also that was already machined for a keyway. if you plan on running the original hub then there were a couple of places you can send yours in for a core on a machined one, it may be a little cheaper.
