Got my engine. Need cam help

2751 Views 21 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  HAHA I 1
Ok I picked up a new LS3 block 4.065 bore 416 ci stroker with 4.00 Ohio crank. Came with Manley 6.125 Ultra Lite rods, LS3 heads that have a mild port and polish to them and hollowed valves, LS3 intake, and LS7 injectors. I'm putting in JE Pistons. So with this combo I need help picking a Camshaft. My goal is to reach 600 hp to the rear wheel. I will post pics soon. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank all.

My vote goes to Ed Curtis of FlowTech Induction. Tell him Bari with the 66 Nova sent you, he'll know exactly who you are talking about.
Thank for the responses. I will call tomorrow. :)
I would call Lunati Cams. or fill out there online request.

Lunati is the only company that has dedicated people and real world testing to the LS engine group. the LS development is many years old for them.

They are the leader for LS cam, IMHO.

To make 600 to the wheels you are going to need a pretty serious H/C combination. I have a 443 LS with a 255/263 cam and hogged LS3 heads. I am hoping for 580+rwhp. My heads will be the limiting factor.
I called Isky cams today and they told me with my setup that a 650 lift cam with 266 duration and 108 lobe center would put me over 600rwhp. Said it won't bleed off compression. Does this sound right?
I couldn't tell you much about specs. All I can say is give yourself the benefit of emailing Ed Curtis.
The Isky cam would mean a 1000 rpm idle? At least 3600-4000 stall and 4:10 plus gears? Or a stick? Not bashing the Isky cam I'm sure they are responding to your request.

Not trying to rain on your 600 rwhp goal but it's going to be a very serious NA engine. Might make more sense to consider a maggy or single turbo.

Still got my buddies stuff over here and he has a cam from Flowtech Induction for a SBF 331 stroker turbo motor. They told him with his setup he will have right around 900hp.
What is a maggy? I have a narrowed 9 inch 410 gears and a turbo 400 with a 36 to 3800 stall. I thought these LS3 were easy to get 600 hp out of??
I sent him an email this morning. Looks like they only do contact via email. Hopefully I'll get a response back from him.
What is a maggy?
Magnuson supercharger I believe he was talking about.
Yes a Magnuson supercharger.

The LS3 stroked to 416 is a great starting point. Easier to make 600 rwhp with it than a small block stroked to 416.

But 600 rwhp is 700 plus at the crank. Allot of hp from 416 cubes.

Talk to any of the LS sponsors that offer engine builds either on this site or on LS1tech. And talk to sponsors that tune high hp engines. Get their opinions.

He will, trust me. I've already been in contact with him and he got back to me about it.

He's definitely a busy man, but I've been dealing with a few things with him so I've been in contact with him a lot lately, so don't feel bad that he didn't get right back to you.

I believe you should have a response in the mail box by now John.
