Gas Gage in 64 Nova

Worked on the gas gage today, with motor running - needle was saying between quarter and empty. Played with ground wire and now the gage said past full. What up. I did put 30.00 bucks in the tank after changing the fuel filter just outside the tank. I do not think that the gage is correct. what else could I look at.

Disconect the guage lead from the sender at the tank check the guage. Now ground the wire you just disconected. one way should read beyond full the other should read empty. If not the guage is suspect. If it reads correctly it's the sender, or the tank ground.

^ right on...do this with the key on - gauge powered.

I just fought through this as well. When the gauge reads past full, there is an open circuit on the ground from the sender. If it reads past empty, the sender wire is shorted to ground. In my case, the wire that attatches to the underbody by the tank from the sender was not grounded well. I took some sand paper and cleaned the area and everything started working again.
