Fuel Sender Question

2326 Views 13 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  mj40's
The 62 I bought came with a full set of digital gauges. Not a fan of these but it's what I got. The fuel gauge is set for several ohm ratings but not the 0-30 the 62's came with. Is there any universal sending units available that will fit the 62 that has any other ohm ratings. 73-10, 0-90, 10-180 or 240-33 (SW)

What type of gauges? Dakota digital has universal sender, part# sen-06-1.
I think a sender from 66/67 will fit the tank and is a 0-90 ohm

That may just work. Classic Industries catalog list the tanks to be the same from 62 to 67. The 66-67 sender is listed as 0-90 ohm's. Thanks!
I have a 0-90 ohm 66/67 unit in my stock 63 tank. Got it brand new off of Ebay. It was cheaper and still had the brass float. Same seller has them now. $30.
I think I have a new one in the shop, I'm away right now and will check when I get back. Let me know if u r interested.
Changed Sending unit

Today I replaced the sending unit for the 0-90 unit the gauge called for. The gas tank was leaking, so I decided to replace that at the same time. The new tank is 16 gallons capacity. I put it all back together and checked the fuel gauge with an empty tank. It read 99%. I added 6 gallons and it read 54%. Added another 5 gal and it read 20%. Seems to me it is reading backwards compared to the Dakota Digital in my 40 coupe. Does this sound right or did I do something wrong???? Besides using digital. I just had a thought- I haven't looked at the back of the gauge to see if it has any switches to change the settings for the 0-90 I used.
Sounds like the gauge is built for 90-0 instead of 0-90 ohms

that makes 3 of us that need that link!
Just wondering... Can you reverse the polarity?
The stock fuel gauge in my 63 reads full all the time. Doesnt matter if the key is on or off. Where should i start to figure out what is bad? I couldnt get the little rubber boot off the connection at the tank and was afraid of breaking it, Does it just pull off and have a nut under it?
Sender

With the ignition on, take the sender wire off the sender and ground it out. If the fuel gauge goes from empty to full the gauge is good and the problem is in the sender. If not it is in the gauge. My sender worked fine but was the wrong ohm for me. You are welcome to it but you would have to pay the ride to Utah.
Sounds like the gauge is built for 90-0 instead of 0-90 ohms
Actually I found that the gauge that was built for 73-10 ohm. That would make it read backwards using a 0-90 sender. After a little research I found that the gauge was per-programed for the Ford/Chrysler 73 to 10 ohm. There were two looped wires on the back of the gauge and to make it 0-90 I had to cut the blue one. Now everything is as it should be. Thanks for all of the input here. MJ40'S
