Hi, the 72 Nova of my girlfriend has a fuel gauge that always shows "full"...wouldn´t be bad, but that´s even with ignition of or battery disconnected. Gas-Tank is filled 1/4 at maximum right now. I removed the instrument from the dash cluster. I can move the indicator by hand in both directions with the same effort. New instruments I found on the net always show empty. How "hard" it is to move the indicator, will the gauge show "empty" when out of electricity? I tried to clean it in an ultrasonic bath (do you say so?) with the hope that maybe hardened grease made the instrument not work properly. When I connect it to a battery directly, indicator moves to full or empty, depending on which terminals I put (+) and (-).

My problem is close to similar. (Thread below..) I don't think that from 63 to 72 the systen has much changed. Do You (or Your gf) have two wires coming to meter? Can You check, what's the resistance on Your meter and on Your cables?

My needle moves to both ways as easy by finger. There is propably no grease to "hold it". Maybe dust..? And if You can - check the voltage to the meter. On mine it is the pink cable. I believe that You might have a broken sensor on the gas tank. Measure the ohms on the cable (against ground). Then we can think about it more..?

I have the same exact problem. I've read through stuff and tried grounding the power wire to see if I can get it go empty but nothing. Just full all the time.

I was having the same issue...the locking ring for the sending unit was touching the tank itself, so i backed the ring off enough for the tank and ring not to touch. I was able to have my wife sit in the car with the switch on and she told me to stop when the gauge started working....no issues since. Just something to look at if you have not, may work for you as well.

are you guys sure you dont just have some kind of magic nova? like, maybe someone stuffed a leprechaun in the tank and now you've got gas that never runs out?

or, a genie perhaps?

my truck's gas gauge is always wrong too. its not the sending unit, fuses, or any wire i can find. supposedly the "printed circuit" must have corrosion or a short in it. i just learned to live with it after a month of trying to fix it.

Ha ha I wish. That's what I do. I've been living with it. I just use an app to jot down my miles etc and check the odometer. Ive only ran out of gas a couple times:D I just fill up every 200 miles.

Question. If you kill the battery, shouldn't the gushed go to empty? Mine stays on full 24/7. And I checked my ground, sanded the connection to make sure it got a good ground. Grounded the hot wire from the sender too. Mine never moved from full.

Whenever I had this issue in my car it was always a bad ground. There were cases where new spots I had used for grounds were no good.

It sounds like you've tried different stuff already regarding a bad ground, but I know with my car whenever it was stuck on full it was always the ground.

I know one time I unhooked my battery and then hooked it back up and my fuel gauge was stuck on full. I didnt even touch the gas tank! So I unhooked it again, and hooked it up again, made sure my ground on the fender was tight and secure, turned the key on, and the gauge went back to normal.

I'd check the ground under the tank, make sure its not hung up somewhere, or touching something else as someone above had mentioned, and then make sure your battery ground is good as well.

Hope you get it figured out, I know how that is, its very annoying. Not the end of the world, but still annoying. Good luck!

...now that the car is finally on the road, I filled the gas tank to maximum. Gauge shows about 1/3 full. Needle goes down when tank goes empty. I will see if I can get a better ground, if it is not working, I will change the sender.

I'm not understanding this. The ring touches the sender and the sender touches the tank. They are all continuous, aren't they? So essentially, the top of sender, ring and tank are all grounded, no?
