Hello, I have a small area in the rear floor pan around the drain plug that's rusted out. I have the replacement pan and am strongly considering doing this myself (I've never welded before). My main question is with such a small patch, about 8" x 8", is flux core okay?

thanks.

I would say yes because its really not a structural area. Just make sure when you get ready to weld it in all of the area is really clean and butt weld it so theres no seam.

Yeah, I'm not so concerned about the appearance, just that it's sound and the rust is gone! I understand flux makes a mess, but is easier..?? Plus harbor freight has $100 units.

Few tips from a welder:
Cut your hole and then lay your piece on top. Mark out the hole on your replacement piece and cut on the outside of the lines.
When you get it fit up, see if you can clamp a thicker piece of metal (can be pretty much anything as long as it is clean) completely covering the gap from the opposite you need to weld, you will find it a lot easier to weld the piece in.

Get some scrap piece's to get your settings right on the machine
