Before I swapped a V8 for the I6 the water temp SS gauge worked correctly. At operating temp the needle was right in the middle of the gauge.
After the swap I put a new water temp sending unit in. It is supposedly the correct one for SS gauges and not the light. However, the gauge doesn't read correctly. Even though I know the water temp is 190 the gauge is almost pegged on hot. This is the third sending unit and same issue with all of them.
I got a 100 ohm variable resistor and put it in line and dialed the gauge to be right in the middle at normal operating temperature. measured the resistance of the variable resistor and it reads 20 ohms.
What do I need to know about getting a 20 ohm resistor to wire in to make the gauge read correctly? Is there a wattage requirement as well?

You should be able to get one at any local electronics store, if you can't find a 20 use two 10s in series. 1/8 or 1/4 watt will be fine.
