I'm looking for anyone who has any advice for tightening up a fan belt. The only other motors that i;ve worked on were newer and had a tensioner pulley or were motorcycle engines, any advice on how to get the belt tight enough?
Your '76 305 is fairly simple. Loosen the 1/2" bolt on top and the 9/16" bolt below. Put a pry bar in the hole in the bracket and pry the alternator tight. Be Very Very careful what part of the alternator you pry against because some areas are thin aluminum. You Do NOT have to force anything. Tighten the upper bolt first then the lower bolt. If it still slips replace the belt.
Ok, thats pretty much what I thought, but I was rather hesitant about sticking a crowbar down there and prying. Today I used some 550 cord tied around the alternator and a buddy to tighten the bolts while i pulled, seemed to have worked. Was jsut wandering if there was a special way to do it.
