Sounds like the same thing mine was doing: pulled hard to 6000 rpm in first, then went flat half way through second gear. If you have a Holley, the fuel may be going to the back of the secondary bowl and starving the secondary jets. I put jet extensions on and it cured the problem. If is not a Holley, give us more info (type of carb, size, fuel pump, ignition, etc.)

In first gear it isnt under as much of a load as 2nd and 3rd. Since you have all new ignition it sounds like you are dropping off in the fuel delivery. It revs up to higher Rs in first, prolly in park too? No load. Its starvin for fuel. Just poking around but replace the fuel filter(s) JR

Personally I've never heard of a lean condition(lack of fuel) causing backfiring thru the exhaust. That's not to say it can't happen...? but if the engine is laying down during the run I'd say check your fuel delivery. Best way is to put in a fresh set of plugs, go make a full pass, at the end pull over and pull a plug. If it looks like you just installed it more than likely you're lean and you need to jet it up. With those edel's you need to change the metering rods. Do yourself a favor and go buy a book on how to tune those Edelbrock/AFB carbs. Or get a good old fashion holley carb.

Also check to see your timing isn't advancing past 3,000. If it's still it could cause a misfire at high RPM.

I doubt that throwing money at a Holley will fix his problem if it did not do this 3 days ago with the Edelbrock. Sounds like electrical to me.

The first thing I would do is check the timing to see if it has moved. If the hold down isnt tight, the distributor will eventually move. If the timing hasn't changed, I would follow these guys advice and check the wires, cap, rotor, etc.

Good Luck

I only suggested that because there are people out there that don't like messing with them carbs. I can't speak for him but holleys are alot easier to tune IMO. I did suggest to buy a book on them carbs so he can read up on them, see what they're all about. And yes it could be electrical...kinda of a broad statement like, " it could be mechanical..."
