It should work just fine. Mine is nestled in the headers, less than 1/8" away and it's been going for years.

Mine was like that and I wrapped it in the insulation just to make sure and its been fine ever since

I used to have a GTO that had that problem. It would heat my starter/celluoid up so it wouldnt start until it cooled down. I got a starter heat shield from a chevy dealer for a big block chevy and put it on. It helped.

A mini starter is tough.Mine lasted in the similar situation.
