I agree with RifRaf, a distributor machine isn't necessary to properly curve a distributor, especially an aftermarket distributor.
Of course it's not and I agree. But once you are spoiled utilizing one it sure is nice! And in particular if it's going onto a new motor that isn't in a vehicle yet.

You're right, having a distributor machine to test and tune the distributor is the best way to go. But I would not want to discourage someone from changing the curve on their distributor just because they don't have a machine.
