You installed the distributor and you set the initial timing to the same as the distributor that you took out?

But its not getting any timing......

Are you saying it is not getting any mechanical advance?

Does the mechanical advance mechanism spring back when you twist the rotor with the cap off? Maybe some springs fell off or the weights were left off.

It has to "be getting timing" if it's detonating. That's what causes the detonation.

no thats fine

i put my performance dist. from DUI in set it at 15 drove it it pinged, set it to 10 and it pinged set it at 0 and it pinged. checked the weights spring are there,
i even put the weights and springs form my stock HEI and still pinged, disconnected the vacc advance and still pinged.

so i put the stock HEI in and it ran crazy fast.
