When you drop a distributer in, can it be "1 tooth off" and still run by turning the distributer itself to get timing? Or does it need to be in an exact position?
Any suggestions for easy drop in?

By convention the rotor normally points to the #1 cylinder when at TDC. But can be installed at any position as long as the cap / wires are routed to correspond with the firing order.

Then fine tune the timing with the slight rotation of the distributor.

Just have to watch for clearance etc fir vacuum ports etc

Run a search - there is a thread somewhere on the topic and how to "Step " the teeth.. FWIW
