I have a Checkered Racing front clip on my '64 Nova and every time I reverse while turning the steering wheel 1 really loud metal crack/pop sound comes out from the under front (no, it isn't Rice Krispies in my engine bay). It only snaps once and won't do it again until after driving away and reversing later.

I've had it to three different shops and no one can figure out what is causing this. One guy thought it could be the heim joints but everything is tight and nothing moves even with light crowbar pry.

Any ideas??

Make sure you lube the ball joints and steering linkage.

Check your sway bar mounts on the lower control arms. I had a similar problem and my sway bar literally ripped the bolts through the thin metal on the lower control arms. I reinforced it with some thicker material.

Grease your ball joints and then grease then some more. My 52 Chev P/U with a TCI IFS under it made a terrible cracking noise when driving. I greased it again and it got a little better. After greasing the ball joints a third time it is now quiet.
