I'm not too familiar with decoding these things, but from the info I see on some websites, the second line of the cowl tag should match the VIN. Am I correct in thinking this? Mine don't seem to match, so I just wanted to check. Doesn't appear to have ever been changed, no evidence of change, and not sure why it would have ever been changed, but just looking for some insight. Thanks!

They don't match. Fisher body imprinted the cowl tags all as V8s. The VIN is what the car actually was.

Cowl Tags displays body options from factory. Color, 2door, 4 door, convertable etc. Usually on the firewall.
Vin Tag, (Vehile Idenification Number) is your number to use for titling that was issued to the car from the factory. It will also give you information to motor, plant produced, year of car and etc. Usually on drivers side cowl door post or dash area viewed thru the windshield.
