If you're not near painted surfaces, lacquer thinner or parts cleaner or mineral spirits all are superb. I've used simple green, but it needs to stay away from paint too, though it's not nearly as aggressive as the other chemicals.
Brakekleen works good with a small brush....a little carb cleaner can do the job also. Just limit the "spraying" so you don't other adjacent painted finishes....even wax and grease remover will work with a little elbow grease...and that stuff is mild.
