my car was horribly down on bower so i pulled the air cleaner off and discovered that the choke was stuck open.i also noticed that at mid to high rpm there was alot of black [gas] smoke.could the choke be causing it to be sluggish?i got it unstuck but then it still wouldnt work right [stayed all the way closed or wide open].what do yall think?

The choke should be wide open when the car is up to operating temps. If the choke was closed or partially closed it could cause some smoke and it would run rough. If the choke is stuck wide open all the time it needs to be adjusted to come on when the engine is cold. Not having an operating choke on a cold engine will make them run rough and not idle.

The choke should be all the way open after the first few minutes of cold starting. The choke is only needed when starting cold. It causes the car to run rich.

If the choke is closed after the car is warm it will cause excess fuel use.

If car is running poorly still with the choke open and black exhaust, look for another problem.
