Found this interesting...Here are some weight tables for the 66 chevy engine weights. I don't know why, but I always had some stupid idea in my head that the V8 was lighter than the 6....

Chevrolet 230 6-cyl------------ 465
--------- 250 6-cyl------------ 480
--------- 283 V-8 2-bbl-------- 575
--------- 283 V-8 4 bbl-------- 585
--------- 327 V-8------------- 610
--------- 396 V-8------------- 687
--------- 427 V-8------------- 700

When the 55 chevy came out with the 265 small block it was lighter than the then current blue flame or stovebolt 6.

I don't know who weighed those but I don't think it's exactly right. Why does a 4 barrel 283 weigh a whopping 10 pounds more than a 2 barrel? The 327 isn't 35 pounds heavier than a 283 either, unless they left the 30 pound flywheel on.
Again just because it's on the internet, doesn't make it correct.
