I might be looking at a used 200r4 transmission out of an 80's Monte Carlo SS. What kinds of things should I be looking at?

Make sure the tag says CZF. If you can drop the pan, look on the side of the valve body for CZ in purple. It also has a specific governor with thin weights. If the pan is pulled you can pull the governor cover and check. Other than that look for the usual trans issues, burnt fluid, metal in the pan, broken parts. Most everything can be fixed though and it is a good core to start with.
