carpet question

hey guys im going to install a roll cage in my 63 nova and i would like to put down carpet do i need to put the underlay down or can i just put down the carpet or would it be better to put down the heat pad stuff then the carpet i use my car for drag racing but i do take it for ocasional cruises and cruise nights
