I agree the hole looks enlarged for "later" transmissions.Looks like the hole has been enlarged???
I was messaging him asking questions, then he stopped messaging and I haven't heard from him. I asked for the measurement of the opening. I was going to buy it if the diameter was correct.I agree the hole looks enlarged for "later" transmissions.
I’m sorry haven’t seen the conversation come through the hole size is 4.690” I have a Muncie with another bell housing that has the hole size enlarged and you can see the difference on the side of the clutch fork.I was messaging him asking questions, then he stopped messaging and I haven't heard from him. I asked for the measurement of the opening. I was going to buy it if the diameter was correct.
Well after doing some research the 3 speeds came with a 4-11/16 (4.687) bearing hole which the one I have has a hole size of 4.690" so it is a 3 speed bell housing.IT has been machined for a 4-speed transmission from a 3-speed.
It was not it still measures the stock 4-11/16"Yes, the casting number tells you it is a 3-speed housing (3788383) the casting number for a 4-speed is (3849309). The 309 housing has a large opening for the 4-speed trans, people enlarge the hole in the 3-speed housing to accommodate a 4-speed trans. This one looks to me like it was enlarged.
Attached is a picture of a standard 383 bell housing notice the difference? There is more metal between the clutch fork adjustment hole to the trans opening than the one your selling.
My apologies you ARE CORRECT! the 383 came with a 4-1/8" bearing hole not the 4-11/16. I got this with a car i purchased so I have no clue about them sorry for the confusion.
