Need some help on which direction to go because when cranking up the engine it backfires bad. Just installed brand new spark plugs but when i checked them they are completely saturated with gas. Could it be a bad carburetor (Holly 750)? Worried about firing it up again because of the backfiring and startup problems just looking for a little help on what my first step should be. This engine has no timing chain but is gear driven. If more info is needed just post and ill let you know. Thanks in advance.

Try turning your distributor in different positions. To backfire that bad you might be 180 off. Did you change distributor? manifold? Was it working fine before?

First off welcome to the site!

so all you did was change plugs and then it started acting up? did you check your firing order? its easy to get #5 and #7 crossed up. check for loose wires at the distributor? coil? MSD or HEI?

like 6nova4 said.. its a very common error. to cross #s 5, and 7..

sound to me like your plug wires are cross up.... check you firing order to the plugs.... odds are you have one or more wires misrouted.
