I've got a B&M quicksilver I'm going to put in my '63. The question I have is how to mount it? Do I need to weld a plate to the tranny tunnel?

The Quicksilvers I bought had 4 mounting holes in the metal frame the shifter mechanism is in, I bent the tabs the holes are in to fit more closely to the tunnel and then marked the floor and drilled the holes,,,,, I have seen short screws used to mount them, I used 1/4 inch bolts and nuts / washers on mine,,,, you will need a friend to hold the nuts if you cant tack them in place or have the type that wedge into the hole, { forget the name }

Be carefull if you try to drill thru the carpet if you have that, you WILL have a big ball of carpet on the bit as soon as you try that lol :eek:

Good Luck :)

There are a number of ways to do it but I like the idea of being able to take it out without having someone under the car holding a nut with a wrench. They always seem to get loose when you do it that way.

On my sons car we made a plate from 1/8” steel and drilled and tapped the mounting hole locations with a ¼-20 tap. We put him in the car and found he likes the shifter a little closer to him and offset a little to the left side of the hump. We leveled and tacked the plate to the floor and then fabbed up a vertical support piece for the left side to extend down to the lower side of the hump and tacked it to the plate. We then removed the assembly after marking the location of the holes in the floor for the right side bolts as well as the shifter cable. We fully welded the “sideways L” piece and then permanently tacked it to the floor with four 1” long tacks.

The shifter is very stabile, can be removed from the top and relocated pretty easy if need be.

On my 72 the hump is really flat at the top so built a similar plate and welded it under the floor.

You can catch a glimpse of the button heads that hold the shifter down in this photo.

I have installed two of those Quicksilver shifters in two different 3rd gen Novas. The mountin tabs were there already on the shifter so all I had to do was drill the holes and use some short 1/4" nuts and bolts. I really like those shifters and even hooked up my reverse lights and neutral safety with the two micro switches included with the shifters.

I didn't have to bend any of the shifter or the bracket at all. I did have to shape the plastic cover to fit the hump as neeeded which is normal.

My buddy and I just used some little spacers and used bolts/washers/lock washers/nuts to mount the shifter on the trans hump. We just had to cut a hole for the cable to go through, etc. Like sbc1320 said I had to grind the plastic cover a little to the shape of the trans hump and then it fit perfectly.

X2 on not drilling through the carpet. I did that once before and some swearing resulted after haha!

I took 1/4-20 shoulder bolts, cut the heads off them, and welded them to the tunnel threads up. When done right, the shifter sits on the shoulder, and a few nuts to hold it down. No need for a second person. Like this, you can position the shifter how ever you want. Just cut to the right length for the placement and weld.

Someone mentioned being carefull when drilling through carpet. I have a trick for putting holes in carpet. Find your location, then poke it with a hot soldering iron. Melts a nice clean little hole. Off coarse, have some water around just in case, but I've done over 15 holes without incident.
