I have a SUMMIT brand one wire alternator. 100 amps Two years old and less than 2 thousand miles on it.

It has just started to put out 18 volts while driving and 14 volts idleing. Do I have a bad alternator and it needs to be replaced or is there something that can be adjusted or a part replaced?

Will leaving it this way cause very bad things to happen?

Is it only 1-wire capable or does it have the option to run it as a 3-wire alternator? That would probably solve your problem. 3-wire is superior to 1-wire in every way.

You might want to check the grounds and the connections from the alternator to the battery .
