Air cooled Powerglide.

I got an oer replacement bellhousing cover. But it doesn't have anything to allow air to flow into it.. Would I be better off (cooler) If I left the cover off? I just didn't want rocks and crap from getting in there but its probably been missing for the last 30 yrs.. I've never seen another air cooled glide with the cover still intact so I don't know if it has a hole in it to direct more air at it or what..

Anybody know about these?

The opening is more like a "scoop" and its the only way to keep the trans temperature down.

I would not cover it up.
I assume you're talking about the transmisions with the big holes in the bell housing. To my knowledge, those transmissions were only used in 4 or 6 cylinder applications. I doubt it would hurt running the standard cover, unless you're towing a camper or something. You could cut some holes in it with a hole saw if you wanted to improve air flow. I'm sure there was a cover on it when it left the factory.
Not sure if my cover went with my transmission (dont think it did) but Ill check tonight to see if I still have it

i have an air cooled P/G flexlate/converter cover in my shop...
unfortunately it belongs to my neighbor who bought my engine & trans but i can dig it up and take a picture of it if needed...

the fluid cooled cover completely covers flexplate & converter, the air cooled cover, as stated, has a scoop on the pass side of cover to direct air in/around converter...
Oh I see. Mine does not have the scoop. So I must have the wrong one. I'm dreading looking for the "right" one I bet they don't make it anymore.

Its behind a stock 2bbl 283 as sort of a temporary arrangement till I acquire the funds to put a 200R4 in so I think its important it stays as cool as possible since its not really meant for the engine.
