I think you're better off grinding on the edge of the ring gear for clearance. The pinion small pilot bearing support area is a weak link as it is, we've broken a few with little smallblocks and street tires. A nodular casting is your best bet for strength. What ratio are you using??

I'm installing 4.33 gears into a case which previously had 3.50 gears.

The gears I was most recently using were 4.11 in a different case and that case had the pinion bearing area ground for clearance. The part that failed was the carrier cap, split right down the middle where the spanner lock bolts on.

I ground a little off the gear and I got uncomfortable so I took the rest out of the case. I would have had to grind nearly 1/4 of the tooth off to clear and that made me nervous. I hope everything works out because its already done and bolted in as of last night. If it breaks at that bearing I guess I'll live and learn...and buy a nodular casting. Thanks for the advice.
