Replacing a lower rear qtr that was damaged...

I expected to have to use some body filler in the joint where the upper and lower meet, but upon taking the old section out I found nearly 1/2" of bondo in the transition from upper to lower qtr.

I bought the car as the second owner and I know it's never been wrecked or repaired before.

Was it common to put this much bondo in at the factory?

It's all on the upper portion and solid metal on the lower.

I could have filled the damage on the lower if I had known this, but I didn't want 20lbs of bondo in my car and didn't want all the trouble of working in a larger quantity. Now (even after buying the new skin) will still have to add 1/2 just to fill out and match the upper.
