71 Nova bench seat & 4 speed shifter help

Hi guys,
The seats that i got with my '71 aren't in the best of shape, but i found a '74 bench seat that's in near perfect condition. Is that the same seat (except for the seatcover) as a '71? Also would anyone know the part number for a hurst competition + shifter handle that clears a bench seat? I saw one a couple years ago, but didn't note the part number. I was doing a '69 RS Camaro then so i didn't pay a lot of attention to it. :(
Thanks
Don

I'm thinking it is. What are they asking for the bench if you don't mind me asking. I've got one in my 69 I wanna move too and was wondering what its worth.

They are asking $160 for it. It looks in very good condition as well. Do you know if the rear seat is the same '71 to '74? I'd like to recover my rear seat with the same type of cover, it's black/charcoal and the cloth also.
Thanks
Don
Wish I had info for you but I just don't know a lot. I see a lot of stuff for 68-74 interchangeable that's about all I know. Hopefully one of the "elders" sees this and can chime in with correct info. Sorry I'm not much help.

The 73 and 74 seats are different than the earlier ones. 73 and 74 seat backs have a metal back with foam on top while the earlier ones have springs with burlap and foam. The headrests are different and the mechanisms for the headrests are different. I bought 73 seat backs and related parts thinking that some parts would interchange, but almost nothing did without some modifications.

I suspect the seats would bolt up okay to the earlier car, but you can't mix seat backs and bottoms without some changing.

This may be the shifter you are looking for. You will also need an installation kit to mount it to the transmission. I can't remember if this was the shifter I bought or not. I made it really hard by buying bits and pieces from various places rather than all at once. Hurst has a rebuild service but by the time you get yours rebuilt, it is cheaper to buy another.

Hope this helps.

I purchased mine for my '69 bench seat Nova (M-20 4spd) in 2000 from Summit. The shifter clears the seat just fine. The # numbers are as follows:

Hurst Comp Plus shifter, part # HUU-3914339 ($159.95 in year 2000)
Installation kit for above shifter, part # HUU-3734529 ($86.95 in year 2000)

Wherever you buy it, make sure that it is the correct shifter for your car and the tranny that's in the car.
Thanks for the info and advice guys, the bench seat i got from the guy he said it was a '74. It has nice springs and looks to be in nice condition so i'm going to use it if it fits on the factory mounts. I need to get a matching rear seat cover to make it look good. The shifter handle issue, i have a competition + in the car, installed by the previous owner so all i'm looking for is the chrome shifter handle which bolts on with the 2 bolts. The shifter & install kit is only a few months old and i'm not going to replace that. If i have to, i'll just make a new handle out of stainless and bend it like i want but i'd rather buy one that fits. The pic on the SS396 site i'll use to compare against what i have, might be it. lol
Thanks again
Don
If you are not fussy, you could pick one up at a swap meet and make it fit.

I bought a looooong 15inch one and my son-in-law cut it down to about 11inches and drilled two new holes. Fits my hand nice, just clears the seat and 3rd works great!!!

You may want to go on Summit and look at all the shifter handles. I sat in the car with the shifter in 3rd and figured out which one would work the best. Bent some coat hanger up and played a bit.

Have fun.

That sounds like what i'm doing right now lol. At the moment the trans/bellhousing is out of the car 'cause the PO didn't do it right. He used some kind of truck clutch pedal, "rigged" a 16mm socket with tie-wraps to it for a return "stop". lol I'll post a pic or 2 soon of that "bubba" action. The clutch fork is also screwed as one side of the fork spring throwout bearing area is eated away too. So it's all out and getting reworked right, new pedals, fork, throwout bearing..etc.
Thanks
