Hi everyone I am new to Steves nova site hope some one can help with my big ideas/dreams.
I have a 74 that is a 6 cyl car that I want to put a big block 454 with a th400 trans. in. What should I be aware of and are the drum brakes and front springs going to be ok for a while?
Thanks for any help or constructive criticism.

first off welcome to the site!!!!

I've never done a 6 cyl to big block swap in a 3rd gen, but my car did have 6 cyl springs in it with a 355 and they were fine. I have heard that the big block would be too much for my old 6 cylinder springs.

I'm still running manual drums and they're okay. But you have to keep them properly adjusted...and often.

It shouldn't be too bad. I would plan on a new set of springs. If you have young, strong legs, manual brakes shouldn't be an issue. You will need to use the early style engine stands from a 68 -70 Nov or First Gen Camaro. This will require cutting off the extension tabs welded on your frame, but they will bolt right on.

You may also need to switch to a big block heater box if you want to run a heater.
