Chris Matte owns this L-79. It is in the registry. He is getting the body done. It is a California car, and you can tell from the rust free floorboards. Maybe someone remembers the car from Southern California.

You can see the red oxide primer on the frame!

One of the owners blew up the motor and put a GM crate 350 in it in 1988. The mechanic who put the engine in has the original motor in his garage! We are trying to track him down. It has a broadcast sheet with M-20 on it. About the only way to get a Muncie without a SS is a L-79 in 68.

He is using a correct dated, casting number correct block and heads. His hope is to find the original motor.

The other Matedor Red L-79 is being restored also, it is a matching #s, original motor sold in St. Louis, MO. Andy Meyers owns it. I will check with him and see where he is at with his.

I started a page on my website called 68 L-79 Nova owners page so I can show updates on the resto's going on and owner history as it comes available.

I talked to one of the owners and he drove the car 40 miles one way to work every day for a long time. Man I can hear that 3:73 taching that motor just thinking about it!

Jeff, it was always my understanding that 4 speeds were available with all V/8's in 1968, but the close ratio was only in the L79. Were they all Muncies?

I am not sure on it but I think you could only get a saginaw in everything exept the SS cars and the L-79. My L-79 has a M-20 also. I geuss you could order any trans back then if you wanted a Muncie.

Yes that is the same person (Andy Meyer) who owns the L-79. He bought it off ebay. His 68 327 Nova at the Nova nationals was pretty nice.

Jeff,Going thru the ebay pictures of the California 68 L79 4 speed (M20) Nova it shows the original smog with it.Nice picture underneath of the dual exhaust, multi leafs,GM bell housing,Muncie trans, shifter etc. This will help your friend document the car too.I believe the car is factory tinted glass too.Was the old Stewart Warner tach mounted on the column still with it? Neat car!

Jeff,One thing I noticed with these 68'L79's,68 L48 or 68 396 Novas is the trans application for gear ratio.Seems the 331 355 373 gears used the lower 256 first gear M20 while the 410 456 488 used the M21 or M22 220 first gear.Another unique feature for 68 Nova was the selection of factory ordered gear ratios to 488's! I would love to find a documented 488 M22 car!!

The VIN is stamped in the Muncie on Chris's so that helps solidify his case. The smog was not on there when I got it. My green one is a 3:31, and my Big block 68 was a 3:55 and Chris's is a 3:73!
