Did the 67 ss 327 ever come with the saginaw trans? I know the used them, just figured the 283 used the Saginaw and the 327 used the M-20. (maybe I'm trippin).

Any info would be great!

The 4 speeds in 1967 Chevy IIs were Saginaw's. In 1966 they were Muncie's. They were both RPO M20 or M21. The 'M' does not stand for Muncie. All GM trannys of this era had the 'M' designation...M35 Powerglide, etc.

So no 1967 ss 4spd cars came stock with a Munice?
Thanks for the help
Some people have said their 67's had Muncie's, but some of them also believed that's what the 'M' stood for. Anything was possible in the mid 60's, so there may have been some Muncie's in '67, but Saginaw's were the 4 speed designated for all Chevy IIs (not just the SS) with M20 or M21 transmissions.

Bob,

Did all 66 SS's come with Muncie's or did some have the Saginaw 4 speeds? I had looked at several to purchase the last several years and all seemed to have Saginaw's? Finally purchased what I believe was an original California car (327/275 and still has factory smog pump on it) and it has Saginaw with date correct casting number and the last 6 digits of VIN stamped in case.

Just trying to learn as this is my first Nova to restore.

Thanks,
Tom

Just tossing in my 2 cents here. My dad bought a new '66 Nova SS with the L30 (327/275 HP) engine. It had a Saginaw 4-speed, as did the other L30s that I knew about in our area. All the '66 L79 Novas (327/350 HP) I remember had Muncies, as did the SS 396 Chevelles that belonged to folks I knew. Corvettes also had Muncies.

Breaking news! I just checked Chevy by the Numbers and it says Muncie 4 speed transmissions were used in Chevy IIs throughout the 1966 model year.
However, beginning in March/66, Saginaw wide ratio 4 speeds were also introduced for use in 283 and 327/275 HP Chevy IIs. They were not used in L79s.
