I'm using a 57/58 ford 9 inch in my 71 nova behind a 454. I'll guess around 450 to 475 horse range.And I'll be running 275/60 M/T drag radials.How strong are the stock 28 spline Axles and the old war case.It will be a bracket car and I'm using a mini spool.Also can you run 31 spline axles with the small bearing ends.Thanks

I wouldn't run 28's with a Big Block at the very least I would run 31's especially if this is a street driven vehicle with a spool. I had 28's in my 9" when I first bought it and I was scared I was going to break an axle with maybe over 400 horsepower. I have since stepped up to 35 spline Moser's.

Check this website out about your stock case. I have always heard to stay away from the "WAR and "WAB" cases. I replaced my stock case with the Strange street case. Check this website out it has a lot of good 9" info.

Definitely replace the stock axles. Don't have them cut, resplined or whatever. Go with at least 31 or 35's if you can. They aren't that expensive and it's a lot of insurance for the money.

trust their words On the stock axles. Been there done that withmy 250 L6 I had a set of 31 spline 9in axles in my 64SS and Twisted6 off a 1 1/2 Off one axle and Just Twisted the other one. Now I'm running a set of 33 splined axle from strange.

NO NO NO NO NO.

I have personal experience snapping a 58 wagon 28 spline rear axle. STOCK 9" PARTS ARE CRAP.

I also.... broke a two pinion posi... broke a four pinion posi... and cracked the axle tube about 20% around at the pumpkin weld. All at different times.

Buy a good set of aftermarket axles.

I now run Mosers with a locker and have the housing gusseted with a backbrace.

I don't want to get into the part about crashing the car because of the axle... it turned left.... HARD after a powershift to second.

I have a buddy with a 9 sec. Nova that's made a lot of passes with 28 splines-no twisting, no breaking, nada. If the car is only making 450 h.p. I wouldn't even change from a stock rear.

The stock axles are soft an will twist an break. At least upgrade to 28 spline Moser, I've run em to low 9's.

I know people who drive on bald tires in the rain and never have problems but I won't ride with them and I won't run bald tires. I twisted shortened resplined stock 31 spline axels with a 3100 lb Nova running 7.20s with a 396 in it. I would suggest you get better axels. You got plenty of opinions so you'll have to decide what to do. If they fail you'll be the one that hits the guy next to you or the wall. RM

Currie makes a good set of 31 spline axles and reasonable. I run a Detroit Locker and Richmond gears....works for me

a buddie of mine run a 64 chevelle 2dr wagon it was a bracket car, 468 BBC & a power glide (was about 635HP, it run a 11.11, & best time was 10.99) with a ladder bar suspension with 14" w slicks and a narrowed 9" with a C7AW-E case & a Detroit locker with 31 spline axles, (I think 456 gears) at 1st when the car was built and raced (1/4mi) he had a set of 31 spline axles re splined & shortened, but it twisted the axle shaft of the 31 spline axles that were re splined & shortened the 1st weekend so he ordered a set of the 31 spline strange axles. problem solved ! and he run this set up for 3 or 4yrs (maybe it was 5yrs, till he sold the car) if I was running a manual tranny, I would run a 9" C7AW-E case or a N case with a atermarket 35 spline axles.

I think 31 & 35 spline axles use the big bearing housing ends, butt you can change the small bearing housing ends to the big bearing housing ends, so you can run the big bearing 31 or 35 spline axles.


you can buy big bearing housing ends, or reuse some big bearing housing ends off a used big bearing housing.
