4160 disassembly question

I'm rebuilding my 750dp...

1) How the ):?$&@ do I get the metering blocks off the main body? The bowls are off but the blocks are not budging. I'm afraid to pry.

2) Should I take the throttle plates off the shafts? The screw threads are swedged a bit...and I'm worried about them damaging the threads in the shafts if I unscrew them. (One shaft has a nylon bushing under the spring, so I can't carb dip it with that on.)

Soak it in some gas for a while won't hurt anything, those old style gaskets are a biitch! Make sure to use the new non stick type blue ones for the rebuild.
If ya take the screws out of the shafts, get new ones and loctite
Red them back in. Think they are 10x32 threads.
Under the bottom of the carb with the base plate on, you can pry the jet plate off.
Soaking the carb as stated will do the job. The older brown Holley gaskets will stick like epoxy!

Soaking the main plate is not a issue, the plastic will not get hurt. Unless your using something kostic.

I would not remove the butter fly screws unless absolute necessary, you will need to file the back of the screw down then remove them. The factory screws are braided on the back side.
I have High flow throttle screws is needed.

Thanks Al!

I was going to soak it in some NAPA carb dip...not sure if that will hurt the nylon or not...does that count as caustic?

I'll throw the base plate back on and give it a shot. It's been sitting (dry) for a few years, so I will try the gas soak too.
I sat the body in a little gasoline for a couple of days, and...voila! Before I couldn't pry 'em off, after...I was able to pull the blocks off by hand with no tools. On to the soak... Now that it's all disassembled, first problem: The main body (and the baseplate) are too big to fit into my 1 gallon can of dip.:mad: I'll have to dig up yardsale stainless cookpot or something...
I use those disposable aluminum bake pans for stuff like that. Usually have one laying around anyway.

Only for you Tony! :D:D

First couple of batches of parts are dipped and clean, waiting for the last batch, then it's the last two biggies: baseplate and main body.
How's that napa carb dip working, good?
The carb isn't *that* dirty, but...yeah, it seems to be doing the trick.

That NAPA cleaner will work better if you put it out in the sun, the warmer the better.
