I just aquired a '66 and it needs some cleaning up. Anybody have any tips or products they use for cleaning the engine area or underside of the car? I don't have a lift, so crawling around on the ground is in my future. Any help is appreciated.

After crawling around on the ground under my car for months during the chassis cleaning phase, the thing I had the best luck with for cleaning the car's underside was the combination of oven cleaner and a plastic putty knife.

The 40 years o'crap just slid right off. :)

Full STRENGTH Castrol Super Clean

This stuff is awesome!

This chassis was NASTY from front to back with grease/road grime.
Went from this:

To this:

in a couple of soak/washes.
NAPA carries it as well as Target of all places (Cheap there too!)

Pretty darned easy right out of the squirt bottle.

Thanks for the tips. I'm sure I'll give them both a try. And I'll try keep in mind how rewarding it will be when I'm done, as I'm laying in the water and sludge. :D

Oven cleaner. Spray on at night - let sit - scrap off in the morning. It softens up undercoating enough to scrap off too.... Watch out for the fumes and overspray that gets on your skin though... wear a mask & gloves

I agree with 65...

In full strength it's pretty toxic. If your going to be right down in it or layin down low a respirator is a necessity!
Cheap insurance for your health.

Paint Respirator

JRChevy - since you're just up the road from me, maybe you want to come down and show me your cleaning technique. :) I might figure out how to clean it properly by the time you finish up. :D
