I have a 1965 Nova SS, Can some one tell me the differance or how to identify the differance between these two engines other that one is a 2 barrel and the other is a 4 barrel. The GM parts manual shows the same part #'s for the block, heads, camshaft and pistons for these engines. So is the intake and carb the only difference. My top air cleaner says 283 220 hp. but it has a two barrel. I beleve someone changed the intake and carb but would like to be certain before I change it. Thanks

220 hp was the same as the 195 hp 283 except the 220 hp had a 4-bbl carb and dual exhaust. Heads, cam, etc were all the same.

Look at your stamped engine code to tell what you've got. Another dead giveaway would be evidence of OEM dual tailpipe hangers.

Chevy By The Numbers shows the 1965 Chevy II 220HP 283 with engine suffix codes ending in PB, PE, PG or PK. I know in 1966 these engines had factory dual exhausts. Could be the same for 1965. Hope this helps.
