Self-adjusting brake mechanisms were supposedly first introduced on the 1963 model as per the original Chevy repair manuals. Have seen them on the front brakes of the several 63s being worked on here but absolutely none on any of the rear ends. Odd that they would be on the fronts only but stranger things have happened; any definitive proof that the rears should contain the self-adjusting gear as well?

My '62 has them on the rear.

Self-adjusters were an upgrade, albeit a small one. Never tried '63 hardware on a '62 backing plate, but that might work. Also, your car might have experienced a rear end swap.
