i know this has been covered before, and i've looked up a lot of info on the search function, but which brand has the best clearence in a full length application?

i'm going to run either the 1 5/8 or the 1 3/4, i have a mini starter and wanted to run the 168 tooth flywheel and it has manual steering and a non stock shifter so linkage is not a problem, also i was concerned about ground clearance as my car has a 2'' lowering spindles, any pics would be great..

thanks in advance

I've found Heddman Elite headers are not true "full length" headers. Hooker Super Comps work well with angle plugs, aftermarket steering systems and actually get the collector under the car. I recently learned this when I ordered Hooker Elite and they did not work with angle plugs and they were short. I also learned that Doug's Headers did work with angle plugs but didnt work with my manual steering rack setup and they were still a middle length header. Super Comps are 31" long while the others, although they claim to be a "full length" really are not. Super Comps all the way in my opinion.

thanks for the pics but i will have angle plug heads and i wanted to try and go woth a full length header, i've heard good things about the hooker super comps but have not seem any pictures, and they make two versions, 1 with 1 5/8 tubes and the other with h 1 3/4 tubes but the headers are not the same as far as tube lay out. does anyone have pics of those headers or does one work better than the other?

thanks

You shouldn't have to search. Best of Powertrain archive has the 1st gen header Q&A.
I think Mike Goble, who used to be a mod here and crew cheif on the durango Duece found modifying over the counter headers was the best option if you want true tuned headers.

NOVA404 has those headers on his car. He has all front steering modified. He sent me pics a while back those hooker headers fit nice. I can't remember if he has angle plug heads or not. It looked to me there is plenty of room for the plugs. If your engine is a mild street piece then get the 1 5/8" I'm sure you can find a good full length header like flowtech or dynatech or maybe the hooker comp. If you got something more then use the hooker super comps.

i just used summit brand headers, fit great for me and there cheaper, about 100 bucks i belive last time i looked i had them jet hotted awhile back other then that work great. they are shorter then most and extremely loud:devil: as for ground clearance lowered or not my oil pan sticks down farther then those headers do , so you should be ok.

thanks lugnut79, those are the 1 3/4 tubed ones, how is the under chassis clearence?

good to hear these work well though.....

thanks

They tuck up nice and tight. I probably have 1" or so between the floor and collector. You cant see my exhaust unless you bend over a bit and take a gander under the car.

thanks all for the replies, i'm more than likely going to go with the hooker super comps, whether it's the 1 5/8 or the 1 3/4, does anyone have pics of these under the car in relationship the the frame?

and why are the tubes different on the pass. side between the 1 5/8 and the 1 3/4 hooker headers? looks like the 1 3/4 have the same bends side to side and the 1 5/8 are different side to side....

The 1-5/8 headers will be used for the manual trans applications so the driver side is a touch different. I like the 1-3/4 they fit the best and offer the most clearance for the rack conversion.

Here are some installed photos

This phot shows the ground clearance with stock front coils.

thank you chuck for those pics, those were perfect, looks like it is the 1 3/4 hooker super comps.

chuck if it's not too much trouble could you get some under car shots of the starter side as well? what size flywheel is he using?

Wow! The 2243 (1-3/4") ones fit my angle plug Pro 1's great, odd that the *smaller* tube ones didn't...I would have guessed the other way around.
It has to do with the #1 cyl. primary tube. The way it is routed on the 1 5/8 causes it to pass just under the #3 cyl.

I will see what we can do for the under carriage photo. He is using the 168 tooth fly wheel. Currently he is using the mini starter, when I was using these headers I had the full size starter on #46-4795 from Napa.
