Hi all:

Anyone out there have a '72 with the original 3-speed saginaw transmission in it? I'm trying to find the gear ratios for this tranny and am struggling for some reason.

My '72 with 350 and 3.08 rear retains the original 3-speed saginaw. I don't know how many rings are on the input shaft and don't want to remove the tranny from the car right now :).

Thanks!

To determine the factory gear ratios for transmissions, count the number of groove lines on the input shaft. Here are some common transmisions with gear charts

Saginaw 3 speed

1st 2nd 3rd

No lines 2.85 1.68 1.00

1 line 2.54 1.50 1.00

2 lines 3.11 1.84 1.00

3 lines 3.50 1.89 1.00
I would guess one of those. My guess is either of the first two. The higher numbers(3+4) were probably used in trucks. Just my opinion though.

Thanks for the reply! I appreciate it.

Nice to see you are from Abilene, TX. I was born there myself.
