What are the possible reasons the hood will not stay up? It doesn't feel like the springs are working at all. Everything looks normal though. I just got this car (first classic) and am working on fixing it up, so pardon any dumb questions. And there will be more to come. Don't worry, I always search for the answer on a previous thread first

I've got the same problem with mine...they wouldn't go Up or Dwn so I lubed them now they won't stay up - thinking about trying some Viagra!

Actually, the post above links to a similar problem...springs have just softened up too much.

I'm getting a new hood (fiberglass 4" cowl) so im going to try my weak springs with that before I go buy springs...

Let us know if the new springs worked...it should.

so it's definitely the springs? EBAY has some, but they say for a 63 and 64. Shouldn't these also work on a 62? Or was there some difference?

ha! yup! i have the same problem but i keep it up with a broom handle when need be
x2 on the springs being too soft. I dont know why the 63-65 springs would be any different but not positive as I havnt done anything to correct the problem myself.

Hopefully another will chime in.

I looked through a selection of springs at a local hardware store. Just when you think it looks right it either has no pull strength or would take a horse to move it. I can just imagine bending a hood in half with the wrong tension spring in place. If anyone has had any luck here a part number would help.

so it is confirmed that '62 springs are year specific. Mine do not work, they are not damged, and they do not need cleaning up. I just need a new set (they are tired). Now the million dollar question....where can I get them? I have searched local classic chevy shops and none of them have any idea. I really am getting tired of using a 2x4 to hold up my hood. Anyone know where these rare springs can be found?
