: Fastback Nova

There's been several posts over the years about the rare fastback Nova drag cars that were racing in the late 60's. I have a bunch of 35mm slides that I am in the middle of converting over to digital and included in them are quite a few pix of the FX (Factory Experimental) cars etc., so I thought I'd post a few every so often for those that want them. I took them here in Seattle and in Eastern Washington.
Here's a couple of the Alan Green Chevrolet Nova that was campaigned out of Seattle and driven my **** Milner who I saw a few months ago and has posted on this board. He now helps out on the John Force team (Ashley's car). Enjoy...

Great pics, love those fastback Novas!! Milner's daughter joined up over at the Yenko site a month or two ago, trying to find some info for a surprise b-day gift for her dad. Nice bunch of folks.

BTW, we ran into the current owner of the cKc fastback Nova at the '07 York Show in PA. He lives in Gettysburg, PA, and I'm trying to get him to bring it to the Nova Nationals. I understand it's a major project car, but I'd love to see it!

The unrestored fastback is the former CKC car. It belongs to a member here. I do not have Andy's contact info, but if you search past threads on Chevy II fastbacks it should show up. He and his father have several historic drag cars.

If anyone has current pictures of the Green car it would be cool The last ones I saw of it were from the mid 90s, in primer and returned to the stock wheelbase with a 67 L88 motor and a Corvette IRS.

Mike, Thanks for the new photos. If you stumble upon any of the Green car and blue or pearl yellow Anglia, I would still be interested in getting copies.

I talked to **** Milner last night for about an hour or so and had him look at the pix that were recently posted. He said the original Allan Green car is no more. Gordon Apgar up here who is a big time collector bought one of the other cars and basically cloned it to look like the original AG car and that's how the rumor got going that the AG car was still around. You are correct, that car in the photos in someone's garage is the CKC machine.

Hi:

Thank you Seattle Mike and Miss Milner for stunning pics!

In your opinion can a NON convertible first gen hardtop Nova be converted to a Fastback?

It seems the "Dixie Twister" in the pics is a model year 1965 Nova SS of which would be a hardtop car. Please confirm the year of this Nova.

Thank you Kindly.

It would be really interesting to know the true history of the fastback cars. How many where actually built and is there truly only one left?

I just re-read the article in the NOVA SS Muscle Car Color History and the part about the fastbacks is told by Gordon Apker.
When I spoke to him in ~1994 after seeing the car for sale in Hemmings, I was told it was the Allen Green car; he told me he purchased it from **** Milner who had it in a garage in Puyallup since sometime around 67. Now with Mike's info from **** Milner and seeing the photos of the stretched chassis version with sponsorship from Lynnwood, it appears it was raced at least through the 60's by a second group of people in the Seattle area. It would be interesting to know when the car was either cut up or totaled and by who...

According to the article in the February 64 Speed and Custom Bill Thomas had built two cars at that time and would build others if customers were interested. That article states that Thomas added the roof and installed the IRS; the muscle car article per Apker stated Chev installed the roofs and IRS. The car pictured in Speed and Custom has a custom dash which matches the Green car. The CKC car as pictured in the February 66 Super Stock & Drag Illustrated shows what looks like a standard, but modified dash. The only place I have seen that 3 cars where built, in print, is in the Muscle Car history and that is also where the information came from about a third car being destroyed in ~1964 in the Los Angeles area.

I do not know the timing, but it seems possible the CKC car, the Dixie Twister and the Doyson car are all the same car. I do have an article from 66 where Platt has a 66 bodied Dixie Twister on a homebuilt chassis, so it is likely he only had the car for a season or two. NNN did a reprint and an interview regarding the CKC car, but there was no info as to where it went and when it was sold. Maybe Wayne has more info he can share with the world.

I have an advertisement for the Dixie Twister '63 fastback Nova from a Drag News mag, I'm not sure what year it's from, but it must be late 60's to early 70's bec/ the car has a 454 in it, The top line is:

HUSTON PLATT'S FASTBACK CHEVY II

Fiberglass body w/ plexiglass windshield and windows. 454 cubic inch (396 type) engine. Fuel injectors. Crower rollerized cam. Forged-True pistons and C&T crank. Tubular front axle with Cragar Mags and 11 inch Goodyear slicks. For info call Huston Platt...

Neat picture with the add, carrying the front wheels on a launch, can clearly see the DIXIE TWISTER on the side of the car, and looks like it has the '63 front end.

How do I post a pic??

According to **** when I talked with him a week or so ago, the Apker car was one of the cars that was built for road racing (like the white one in the For Sale ad posted on here). He evidently bought one of those and painted it up like the AG car. If you notice, the road race versions weren't the altered wheelbase setup. Sounds like it was a "sort of" clone.

1badnov

Bill Thomas built 3 cars for chevrolet to go road racing @ sebring. The even put 427 mystery motors in them. Then chevy pulled the plug on him and he was supposed to destroy them. Instead he sold them to drag racers. 1st Allen Green car, 2nd CKC car & the 3rd to platt (Dixie Twister) car.

In the Nova SS book published by motorbooks international, page 100 it has the story about the cars. The Apker car was the Alan Green car. The CKC car was raced into the mid 70's. The dixe twister was destroyed 2 months into it's dragracing career.
If somebody has this book please scan the story. I dont have a scanner.

The problem with the Motorbooks/ Muscle Car Color History NOVA SS is the information on the fastbacks appears to all from Gordon Apker. With the information Mike got from **** Milner the information may not be all correct. In this book it mentions that there were three cars and one was destroyed within a couple of months when owned by a LA Chevy dealer. If true, this would leave only the Green and CKC cars. I still believe the CKC car, Dixie Twister and the Doyson car are all the same vehicle.

The Green car was constantly being modified when it was raced. I was around the shop when Thayne Porlier put the straight axle under it and I may be wrong, but I believe Thayne shortened the wheelbase and put an Olds rear under it. When I spoke to Apker in ~ 94 he claimed he had the Green car which he got from **** Milner and partially restored it back to a Chevy II front suspension, a Vette IRS with stock wheelbase and a 67 L88 427. He felt was a close as he could get to one of the Mystery motors. It is the white car in the book. If the information Mike received from **** Milner is correct, that car is either the LA car rebuilt or Apker went to alot of work to build a "clone". I realize $25K was a lot of money for an old race car in 94, but I doubt that amount would have justified building a car from scratch.

I am not claiming to be an expert on the fastbacks or calling anyone wrong. There are just a lot of inconsistencies in the history of the cars. Maybe Wayne at NNN, Andy who now owns the CKC car and **** and Meagan Milner can pool their information and get a true history of the cars. It would may a very entertaining article for Hot Rod, NNN or even a small book.

I wish I had been smart enough to take pictures. I was between 9 and 12 when this was all going on. It was just part of life. The Allen Green car and Adair&Porlier and later Porlier Speed Specialists Anglia matched race very often during those years as they were close, et wise, door cars. My father helped contribute to the Porlier car( usually short blocks and Muncies) so I often went to the races and helped clean up the shop.

What I do remember best were the games both teams played. It was either a three or five race program and the only real race was the last. The 454 in the fastback came as a surprise one race as it been a small block for its early life. The Anglia ran anything from a 302 to 365hp 327 parts dept motors (old time crate motor) to 377's. With the CSC 454 the fastback started to getting the upper hand. Somehow Thayne came up with a 402 small block, I believe built by Chet Herbert, that was supposed to be same spec as the motor used in the dragster that was the first Chev past 200mph. It evened things up until the Chevy II started running "exotic" fuels. The Chevy II had a violent engine explosion at Puyallup and that may have been when they quit running it. Shortly after that, Green started running a tube chassis 67 Camaro funny car and the fastback disappeared.

Additional trivia:
I have not found a copy, but I seem to remember CSC using a picture of the Green fastback in their magazine ads for their 454 stroker motors.

I have not seen it mentioned in regards to the history, but at the time Allen Green Chev was a dealer for the Bill Thomas Cheetahs. Might be part of the reason they were able to the fastback

Thanks for model info!!! I have been holding on to a couple of the Twister kits and an AMT 63 Chevy II trying to figure out how to build a decent version of the fastback. This makes it very easy.

When I get back home I'll give **** a call and get him on here again. He hasn't posted for a while but he can clear up all the questions. I'm sure he'd love the models too.

It's COLD and nasty here in New York, especially after being in Scottsdale for 4 days!

For those still interested, Super Chevy's 2007 Nova special has an article on the CKC fastback. The magazine is available through Super Chevy back issues. This article states that four cars were built. The CKC car came through **** Harrell, the Alan Green car and Houston Platt in Georgia. The fourth car according to the article was converted to a street in is "in the hands of a collector"

The "collector" was probably referring to Gordon Apker (sp) here in Seattle but it was a conversion and not the real thing according to **** Milner. That was quite a while ago (years).
