Where DO these people get their information? No L79s built before January/66 and they were introduced in March.....what a hoot! This is going to be a big surprize to all those people with L79's documented as being built in Fall of 1965 and Jan/Feb 1966.

This engine was on Ebay a few months ago. Unless it was one of the blocks shipped to GM Canada, it should have a partial VIN stamped somewhere near the suffix code. I have never seen an L79 engine in a Canadian Chevy II with a VIN stamp, but it should be there on a U.S. built car.

The L79 option for 1966 Chevy II's could be ordered for any model...SS, benchseat hardtop, 2 & 4 door sedans and wagons. 3547 were SS's, approx 200 were 2 door sedans, the remainder being benchseat hardtops and a few wagons. I don't think anybody has come across any L79 4 doors.

I emailed the seller questioning the front pad. here is his response

HI, I HAVE HAD 3 OF THESE 66 1362 327'S AND NONE OF THEM HAD VINS. THE ENGINE PLANTS WERE LAX UNTIL GM AND THE GOVERNMENT GOT TOGETHER FOR THE 67 MODEL YEAR. 67 WAS THE FIRST YEAR THAT GM PUT HIDDEN VINS ON THE DIFFERENT MODELS. I HAVE HAD 67 1362 BLOCKS WITH THE VIN AND ONE WITHOUT. THE STATE OF OHIO ASWELL THE REST OF THE STATES ARE GIVEN BY THE AUTO MANUFACTURERS A DETAILED LIST OF THE HIDDEN VINS ON THE MODEL LINE UP.THE VIN STAMPED ON THE FRONT OF ENGINE PAD IS 1 OF THE 7 LOCATIONS. IT IS VERY RARE TO FIND VINS ON 66 AND EARLIER MODELS. EVEN THE CORVETTE IN THE EARLY MID YEARS LIKE 63 AND 64. I HAVE A 64 NUMBERS MATCH ORIGINAL NO VIN ON THE MOTOR BUT IS ONE ON THE TRANSMISSION. I HAVE A DOZEN BLOCKS ALL 66 AND OLDER NONE HAVE A VINS. THE BOOKS WERE NOT WRITTEN BY THE PLANT EMPLOYEES BUT BY PEOPLE WHO WERE OUTSIDERS LOOK AT RECORDS AND MAKING ASSUMTIONS. I HAVE NO CLUE WHY THE BOOKS SAY THE PLANTS STAMPED ALL 327,396,427 IN 66 BUT IN FACT IT IS RARE TO FIND A VIN STAMP ON A 66 BLOCK. YOU ARE WELCOME TO COME AND LOOK AT THE ORIGINAL BROACH. I HAVE HAD EXPERTS LOOK AT IT UNDER THE MAG-GLASS--THEY AGREE WITH ME "IT'S THE REAL DEAL"---FURTHER I HAVE A FRIEND IN DUNDEE MICHIGAN WHO HAS A NUMBERS MATCH 66 NOVA SUPERSPORT L-79 WITH ALL THE PAPER WORK AND PROTECTO PLATE---HIS HAS NO VIN ON THE FRONT PAD. IF I WAS TO SEE A VIN STAMPED ON THE FRONT PAD OF A 66 NOVA 327 A RED FRAG WOULD GO UP IN MY HEAD. HOPE THIS HELPS---MR.SUPERSPORT

He is correct that there was no requirement to put VINs on engines in 1966. Some had them and some didn't, maybe determined by which factory built the car. I believe the engine VIN program became compulsory in 1968. He is incorrect in implying the engine VIN was part of the hidden VIN program. A VIN on the front engine pad can hardly be called hidden. The fact that some engines had VINs and others didn't makes a good case for 'buyer beware, when purchasing a block.

FWIW, I have a early '66 Nova L-79 engine. The engine code is there but no vin #. I know this is the real thing 'cause I took it out of the brand new car. I don't remember what assembly plant built it.

The curious things is, below the engine code and in much smaller font than the engine code were very small stamped numbers in a kind of random location. Maybe three of them.
