350 vs. 454

i have a ? what are the pros and cons between a 350 small block and a 454. i have an option to get a brand new bareblock 350 small block, or i can go with a used 454 which id probably have to take apart and rebuild.

well im starting the project my 79 nova and i want it to be the typical sunday driver and maybe an occasional drag racing or two. I am either going to get the jegs 350 small block (3 year warranty unlimited miles) and build it up, or i had an option to get on a 454 used engine.

350:
+Cheap to build compared to a big block
+Tons of parts, kits combos etc etc.
+Light
-Less cubes/needs to be more radical for high horsepower
+your car is probably set up for a small block already.

454
-Expensive to build compared to a small block
+Tons of parts as well
-Heavy
+More cubes/more horsepower potential
+Tons of torque and will be milder than a small block with comparable hp.

If all you want is a Sunday driver I'd go with the small block.

To add to what Muscle Dreams said...

To get ~400-450 HP out of a 350, you'll at least need aftermarket heads which can be costly, then matching intake/cam/etc...and it'll end up being a mid-range to upper RPM motor.

To get the same power from a 454, you can get away with mostly stock parts, or modified stock parts, and it'll have a TON more grunt in the lower rpms--TORQUE! You'll save money not needing to buy aftermarket heads!

The potential with a big block comes from the jump in displacement, as well as better flowing heads (larger valves, runners, etc that stock SBC heads)...

However, with the big block somes other headaches including clearance issues and added weight.
Also, when you decide to go beyond stock/mildly modified, big block parts get pricey in a hurry. Cranks, pistons, heads, etc...all at higher costs than similar parts for SBC's.

Your words...." i just got my bare 350 small block today from JEGS and i guess thats the first step in the rebuilding process. Im hoping to have the engine built and put in by september/october i want to build it right now on cheap parts"

I'm confused??In your post early in the morning(7am something)you said you just got your bare block from jegs today? Now your saying you might get a bare block or a 454?Did you get the 350 block today from jegs?Just curious..bm

so what type horsepower could you expect from a stock 454 with a 20 over bore.
also would my th350 turbo trans handle the motor with just a stock rebuild with shift kit and stock 8.5 rear(hopefully soon upgraded with a powertrax in it)

cause the shop that im planning on having my motor built at is only about a 1000 for a vortech 350 or 1200 for a 454.
which would you choose if the car is gonna be a driver, and driven rough

the 350 bareblock is ordered and waiting, but i live down the street from jegs, they have those parts in stock so its not really an order just a matter of me picking it up. What caught my eye was the local drag strip around me, in which a friend won a couple thousand dollars racing in the 13/14 second bracket..... so i was wondering if i could get a 13 seconder out of a 350 small block for less than 3k?

that looks good but i want to have the satisfaction of knowing i built it myself, but im glad there are engines being sold for less than 3k that offer that! ill have to check his ratios and the ways he has the engines set.

How in the world did you come up with a BBC costing more to build???
I build both on a regular basis and if ya build a 10:5:1 BBC and a 10:5:1 sbc both with hydrolic the cost is within $200 of each other !!!!!!
If you are paying that much more for your BBC parts, someone is ripping your head off !!!

If you are going to go 500-600 h.p., you can do it cheaper, and more reliably with a big block. The big block will weigh more.

My question is would it be smarter to go with a jegs 350 smal black, or try to find a 454 at a junk yard? it would be 634$ for the 350. how much do machine shops charge to clean up a used engine?
