transmission problem

I have a turbo 400 in my project, when you shift it manually into first gear it feels like the brakes are on, all the other gears work well. It always starts off in second and shifts smoothly into third. I had it rebuilt at a trans shop and no one will tell me what is wrong. Does anyone here have an idea?

sounds like something in the valve body may be stuck.

Is it a full manual VB? If so, the shifter may be out of adjustment. If it has a shift kit, maybe a ball is out of place. But I would go back to the trans shop first. If you get no satisfaction, pay the piper and go to someone else. Dave

I agree, i would go back first before someone else looks at it. Does it shift properly when in drive.
