Convertible owners...got a swaybar?

In the process of stripping my Nova 400 hardtop, I noticed that it was equipped with an swaybar up front.

Today, I finished stripping the suspension from the SS convertible and noted that it did not have a swaybar. I called Novavetteguy and learned that his convertible did not have a swaybar either when it was stripped for it's new aftermarket subframe.

So, was this common with convertibles, or do some SNS member have swaybars on their stock convertible suspension?

My 63 vert has one .Looks to be in the same condition as the rest of the suspension ,so I would guess its original or added a long time ago. I forgot it had been upgraded to 5 lug so may have been changed then. Sorry no help

I believe the front bar came on any station wagon or any factory V8 car.

Hmm, never heard of one on anything but a wagon until 64 when the V8 came out. Never say never.

Anyone else with thoughts on this?

Do you think it was part of the SS package along with the 14in wheels for verts in 63

My 63 SS Vert does not have one. My 65 SS V-8 car does. Not sure what RPO option you would have to order to get it.

First, my SS convertible does not have a sway bar. All the '63 convertibles were built at Willow Run. I don't think some would have had sway bars and some not. I've never seen or read anywhere that sway bars came standard on these cars or were an option. The assemby manual does not show them, either. It's likely these were aftermarket add ons to some cars over the 50 years of their existence.

Would you agree with my statement that all wagons had a front bar though Bob?

My understanding is that for 62-63, the only cars that got sway bars were wagons and taxi/police cars. In 64 and later, V-8 equipped cars also got sway bars. Just because a Nova was an SS or convertible did not mean it got a sway bar.

I know that beginning in 1964 all wagons and V/8 cars had a sway bar. Previous to that, I don't know for sure, but I found something interesting on the RPO page of the 1963 assembly manual. In hand written lettering, RPO F40 HD Suspension was added to the list. If this really was available, it could explain the sway bars on some 63's.
