oil pump primer tool

Trying to find pics or directions on how to make a oil priming tool from an HEI dist. I have a old HEI dist that I would like to make a priming tool out of. Getting ready to start motor for the first time ,adjusted valves and installed header gaskets today all I need now is my new engine harness to arrive from AAW and to prime motor.

You just need the shaft and the housing. Remove the gear and everything else.

I made one out of a length of round bar with a slit cut to fit the oil pump, then added a piece of rubber tubing over the end to keep it centered on the oil pump.
Much easier than cannibalizing a distributor.

What I learnt is to prime the engine until you see oil coming out of each of the rockers. (Which takes a while)
How do you fixed so you get oil to the lifter gallery and up to the heads with that?

I don't think it will come out of the rockers unless the engine is rotating. It will only pump oil up to the lifter valley.

Here is mine, I need to take it to Art so he can machine off the point housing. I cut the toothed gear off which gave a longer shaft to get the drill on.

Yeah I made one out of an old distributor, I was told to do so, because there is a journal on the distributor shaft that blocks off a passage, allowing oil to make it through the engine and will eventually come out the rockers,,, You may only get oil coming out some of the rockers, when you do, then turn motor 90 or 180 degrees and prime again, keep doing it until all the rockers get oil.

This is how I did it. hope this helps out somehow.

Priming engine.

If on a engine stand rotate the engine while priming.
Will take 2 people.

Priming engine in car.
Get oil pressure and then crank the engine over while priming.

I am wondering,, I have heard different ideas on this subject,
I did get all the rockers to get oil doing what I did,(post#9) but it probably took me 15 to 20 Min's,not sure , I was not watching the time.It took a little.
I have never been told to use two people.

If you don't turn the engine while priming you can run the drill all day and never get oil out all of the rockers. At least i Couldn't. Gave up after a few minutes and started rotating the engine. The rotating engine moves the oil passages around so you can get oil everywhere. You need a good drill and patience.
