Haven't heard anything about them but generally "cheapest" doesn't usually mean the best. 500hp is 500hp no matter what engine makes it. Also, they can make engine dyno's read pretty much whatever they want to make people feel good. My question would probably be exactly what quality components make up this engine and is it a known combination. It might make 500hp, but for how long?

Isn't patriot performance from the Jegs catalog? I looked into them and was not happy with the parts they were throwing into them, they were like a dressed up Jasper engine.

I'd be interested in finding out what kind of pistons they use. Both Jegs and Patriot's site just say "forged pistons" . Cam #'s would be nice too. They do use a Dart SHP Block with splayed caps for a base though. I was looking at their 600Hp 383 a while back.

I purchased 4 crate engines from Speedomotive and had nothing but success with them.

IM just looking for a good built 383 for my 63,never gonna spray it,but still need a stout bottem end due to my heavy right foot problem...
also looking for around 500 hp...gonna look into speedomotive, see whats up there....I really dont know if I can build a stroker for the same money as these crates go for, thats why im interested, got so much to do on the car, just want a good long block 383...to cut build time, but not build quality, just sizeing up whats out there now, wont need till later this year.
any more input would be great--

Do yourself a favor and save your money and DO NOT purchase a patriot performance crate motor. I bought one and it has been a problem since start up. Four broken rocker arm studs in the first 800 miles. Worst crate motor I've even bought.

Broken rocker studs sounds like a valvetrain alignment or sizing problem to me. Who matched the cam with the valve springs? Have you checked the wipe pattern on the valve stem? How are you adjusting the lifter preload? How much RPM are you turning? What brand studs are you using?

I am pretty sure Huntsville Engine is assembling these engines (at least the short blocks) for Patriot. Those guys know a thing or two about building engines. Of course the biggest issue is what parts are used, and the budget engines will by default have cheaper parts.

I know they are using the Patriot Performance heads on them.....

Don't get me started on them.
http://www.stevesnovasite.com/forums...86&postcount=6

I have heard Gunner is no longer there and things have changed but I haven't recommended anyone else to use their stuff since.
It's just not worth the risk to me or my reputation.

There's a good number of builders out there that are building GOOD quality packages.
I know Carl (CNC Blocks on here) is doing a Dart Block, all forged 406 for around $3500...Add a cam and lifters and the heads of your choice and your longblock is done......and I'm sure he can package all that up for you as well.

CNC Motorsports is another good place to look......As is Coast High Performance.
