Gas mileage

I have a 78 four door with a small block 327. Right now I am getting I think 6 mpg. What is the most I can get and what can I do to increase the mpg's.

Are you running points or HEI? What carb are you running and when was the last time it was rebuilt? What type of tranny does it have? Also if you know your gear ratio that would be helpful too so we can help you out.

Oh boy 6 mpg, I can't wait to find out what mine will be, I bought the car with a half tank, and just moving it around and revving it I am now close to empty

Are you sure it's only 6 mpg?

My 10:1 compression 383 with an Edelbrock 750 gets around 14 mpg average, hwy/city driving.

If you are only getting 6, something is really wrong. Low teens should be easy, even if it is really tired! My 73 with a 396 BB got 12.

You should be in the 14-16 MPG range with no effort.

If its really 6 MPG, you have a problem that should be easily identified. Ie., leak at the tank, fuel pump, carb, etc.

14-16? wow that is much much better, I can handle that. With insurance only costing 100 a year, all my money can go to gas

Just a few things.

Make sure the carb is working correctly. I've been the victim of a so called rebuilt carb and turns out the guy put the gaskets, float and pump in wrong.

Also, try some E3 sparks plugs. I tried them in my Silverado and I got better power and more MPG

I doubt you get 6mpg.....give the car a tune up.

If you have, do you have the right size carb?

That would be my problem. I am lucky if I get 10 due to my foot!
