Comments:
I purchased a '70 base model 307 powerglide w/ A/C 3-owner car in 1997, and I drove it through college and to work while racing it most weekends. I built up the drivetrain first (getting mid 12 second passes N/A at the track), then in late 1999 she got a paint job on a student's budget. In 2000 she moved to weekend warrior and nice weather driver as my work commute took a bump to 80 miles round trip (she makes that trip a few times a year, but gas isn't cheap)! I did a new 383 stroker and had a custom 5-point rollbar done in 2003, and an interior re-hash in 2005 with a new dash.

A couple shots from 2001-2006:

Part two:

Since I figured the wife and I would add kids to the household soon, she and I talked about my wanting to re-do the car before time and money were in shorter supply, thus my 2 year project. A makeover in paint and more began back in November 2006, and like all projects go, stuff was added and changed (like upgrading the 5-point to a full cage, new stuff not part of the original plan, etc). A new 383 solid roller pump gas motor was built, and after a lot of work by quite a few people, last month would be the first time she saw street and track time in just over 25 months.

A few pictures to show the teardown and process:
