Topless 1966 Sport Coupe

Made from a six cylinder sport coupe. Doesn't say, but doesn't appear to have a top. Looks like they just cut the hardtop off. Looks totally unfinished at top of the vent windows. Same for side windows without proper convertible glass frames. Probably cost considerable money to build, but not a great result.

That's listed as a convertible but it's not. It's a '66 hardtop with the roof cut off. I guess it doesn't rain or get cold in Michigan.

There is someone in my area that did it right. He took a rusty '63 convertible and completely reskinned it with '66 body panels and trim. A '66 convertible, as it should be.

I agree. The best 2nd generation conversions utilize a '62 or '63 convertible tub with '66 or '67 sheet metal hung on it. This provides the correct windshield and side window height and 1st generation convertible top assembly.

Has window cranks. I wonder if the windows roll up and down.

I like the profile and wish GM would've officially made a '66 vert but I agree the vent window is wrong, the A pillar looks lost.

The no-top '66 just looks a little off at the windshield and A-pillar. The rear looks OK, but again, no top. The one really great advantage there would be the chance to put some well-designed bracing across the rear half of the car for stiffness. But if there isn't something seriously done to brace the bottom of the car front to back, it's going to fold up rather quickly and handle like a dog.

People have done nice '66 converts out of a '62 or '63 with '66 sheetmetal. Doing that right not as easy as it seems. I don't know what it is about the convertible top, though. It seems to fit with a '62-3 body or roof line, and looks out of place when the top is up on a '66 conversion.

I'm wondering if someone has ever done a spectacular '65 conversion?

Yeap I don't care for any convertibles myself, but the back looks nicer than the front.

Didn't Big Al have a nice convertible one he was doing some mechanical LS install on for somebody a good while back?

Yes, considering most 66/67 convertible conversions have 62/63 'A' pillars, windshields, side glass and convertible tops, they do look different. The 66/67 cars have a more slab sided design than 62/63, which may make the visual difference. I agree they look great with the top down.

Many years ago (before cell phone cameras) in Kelowna B.C., I saw what I think was a '65 convertible conversion. It wasn't a 'spectacular' job and it was difficult to determine if it was a '65 hardtop converted to a convertible or a 62/63 convertible with a '65 front and rear.
