66 L79 valve covers

I have a set of chrome NOS valve covers for a 66 Chevy II L79. GM #3858863. They both have the tabs (for wiring). I always assumed that only the passenger side had the tabs. I looked in the parts book and the 3858863 is listed for both the left and right sides. There is a NOS set for sale on eBay and that set also has the tabs on both sides.

Is that correct to have the tabs on both sides?

No - and your memory isn't playing tricks on you. Just to be sure, I dug out the original valve covers for my '66 L79, and only one of them has the tab.

My guess is that Chevrolet only stocked the valve cover with the tab as a replacement to save on inventory costs. No one back then cared much about exacting originality! The tabbed cover would have taken care of ANY replacement needs, so why stock both?

Only one side should have tabs, but this cover goes on drivers side.

I think you're right, Dave. Checked the Classic Industries catalogue on these and they show a pair...both with tabs.
